As to be expected from a basement battle in Germany’s third tier, the 3. Liga, Stuttgarter Kickers and Holstein Kiel did not serve up a classic football feast under the Friday night floodlights.
The 11,410 capacity Waldau Stadion was probably three-quarters full, and the 0-0 result did neither side any favours. The Kickers are still mired in the bottom three, despite picking up 8 points from 15 since the return from the winter break. A drop to the fourth, regionalised, level of German football would be disastrous.
The visitors are a little higher up the table but still in with a chance of being sucked into the dogfight. They appeared to be the better side throughout, denied several times by last-gasp saves from the Kickers’ keeper, as well as their own poor finishing.
Kickers grew into the game in the second half, driven on by their enthusiastic jack-in-the-box of a manager, but never truly threatened to breach Holstein Kiel’s goal.
